Speech Pathology Telepractice Available

 Little Birds can also provide Telepractice services allowing continued access to intervention for all. If this is something you would consider, please advise the clinic when making your appointment.

Chinese and Vietnamese Speech Pathology Consultations Available

We have bilingual therapists whom can consult in English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese. For our bilingual or multilingual families this will provide an opportunity for expert care in children growing in multilingual environments.

Services

  • Our team at Little Birds can provide speech pathology services in the following areas:

    • Articulation (Speech)

    • Fluency (Stuttering)

    • Language - Receptive (Understanding) and Expressive

    • Literacy (Reading and Spelling)

    • Feeding and mealtime support

    • AAC - Augmentative Alternative Communication

    • Sensory processing

    • Childhood Apraxia of Speech (Motor Planning of Speech)

    • Kinder/Prep Screening assessments

    • Emotional Regulation

    • Motor Skills (Fine and Gross motor)

  • Whilst our clinic specialises in a paediatric client base, we do not have a set age range.

    Our current clientele are typically between 2-18 years old, but we also have clinicians who are able to see adult clients.

  • We also have occupational therapy services, which can provide support with motor skills, sensory regulation, emotional regulation, and functional skills.

  • We currently have a waitlist time of approximately 1-3 months for regular therapy appointments. However this varies and is an estimate only.

    If you are flexible with your availability we will most likely get in touch with you much sooner!

  • Once we have an availability that matches your time preference, our administration team will be in touch via phone calls. When the session time is confirmed, you will receive a new client intake form which needs to be completed and submitted online prior to the initial appointment.

  • We have very limited capacity for school visits.

    We do not offer home visits at the moment.

  • We have speech pathologists who can also speak Mandarin and Cantonese.

Common Questions about Speech Pathology

  • As long as your child is receptive to the therapy sessions and family can follow up with home practice, there are always benefits to attending Speech Pathology.

    If you are unsure, we encourage you to discuss with our clinicians after your initial session as our clinicians can inform you whether therapy sessions are required for your child.

  • There is no right time to see a speech pathologist. If you are concerned with your child’s speech/language, get in touch with us to organise an assessment.

    If your child requires therapy, early intervention is generally encouraged where possible.

  • No, being multilingual does not generally affect your child’s speech and language development.

    Delays in speech/language can be due to various factors, for example: environmental opportunities, underlying diagnosis of developmental delay or simply learning the ‘rules’ incorrectly.

    Being multilingual does not cause speech/language delays.

  • For your initial appointment, your clinician will set aside some time to get to know you as a client and your concerns.

    This usually includes a detailed assessment of your child’s speech/language abilities, depending on your concerns and the clinician’s observations.

    For your therapy sessions, our clinician will plan individualised therapy for your child, depending on what was discussed during your first session.

  • Each assessment is different and will depend on your child’s needs. It usually involves activities that will elicit speech sounds/language use from your child for the clinician to observe.

    If your child is able to complete a formal assessment, it will provide scores to help the clinician understand what level your child is at and how they are performing compared to their same-aged peers.

    The results are used for goal setting and these scores are also used in report writing.

  • A brief initial summary will be provided after the initial assessment, which is free of charge.

    If you need a formal written report (for NDIS application, ASD diagnosis etc), there will be an additional cost.

  • We generally ask that you are present for a portion of your first session as the clinician may ask you questions regarding your child and your concerns.

    Otherwise, as long as you and your child are comfortable with our clinicians, you do not need to be in the session.

  • Each child’s therapy session plan is individualised to your needs. For younger children, we often incorporate the appropriate therapy into a play-based activity.

    If you have an appointment with us, please feel free to ask your clinician about the therapy being implemented.

Payments

  • We accept: Chronic Disease Management (or sometimes called EPC care plan), NDIS (Self-managed or Plan-managed only), HCWA (Helping Children with Autism), and private health insurance (we will provide you with a receipt).

  • Referrals are not required to attend Little Birds Speech Pathology.

  • (For NDIS clients) We would like a copy of your child's NDIS Plan so our speech pathologist can read and understand your child's goals.

    However, you don’t have to share your plan with us if you do not wish to.

  • With a GP Care Plan, the current Medicare rebate is $58 per session. Up to five sessions can be claimed per calendar year. You will still need to pay the remaining session fee out of pocket.
